January 23/24 Winter Weather Thread
« on: January 22, 2008, 05:44:44 PM »
Well since the NWS says we have a chance for winter weather for the night of the 23rd and the day of the 24th I went ahead and started the thread for it.
Quote
Wednesday Night: A chance of flurries after midnight. Partly cloudy, with a low around 22. Calm wind becoming west northwest around 5 mph.

Thursday: A chance of flurries before noon. Partly cloudy, with a high near 27. North northwest wind between 5 and 10 mph.

Well we have seen how this type of forecast has panned out so far.

I'm going out on a limb and say there will be 0" of snow on the ground in middle TN during this time frame. No dissapointment that way!

The way I see it, we will get nothing.  Total bust.

OH NO!! This is what we're reduced to now? Starting a thread about a possibility of flurries?!?

P.S.: I just got through looking at the 12z NAM/GFS to make sure they aren't strengthening the possibility of some light moisture associated with this cold front. ;D

I think we should try some reverse psych.
Lets start planning for our gardens and warm weather. Pretend Winter has not in reality just started.
Maybe that way we might actually get some winter weather.  Nest system that comes our way - lets talk gardens and summer and ignore the snow chances......maybe we will just get lucky.

Remember last year though guys - the late freeze in what April? or was it May.  I for one lost so much vegitation. I had not planted anything yet - not that stupid - I have lived down here for 20 years and know not to plant until early May.   So I really do not thinkn winter is over - and we will get ours. We just need to be patient.

Our winter stuff usually comes February and beyond.  It is just the way things are.

That’s what troubles me. This notion that we have to take sides in this country now, you’re either with us or against us, Republican or Democrat, red state or blue state. No one looks at an issue and struggles over the right position to take anymore. And yet, our ability to reason is what makes us human. Lately, we seem so willing to forfeit that gift of reason in exchange for the good feeling of belonging to a group. We all just take the position of our team.”

BTW just check NWS 7 day - they have sleet/snow/rain chances for Friday night.

So here we go again with our hopes up.

Or for me - hoping it does not come to pass as I have to work Sat at the ER. Calling out is really not an option. Probably no worries - it won't happen.

Hmmmm....schools are closed here tomorrow. Not sure why unless they expect black ice in the AM. Roads are very wet right now with mist like rain falling. If it drops below freezing quickly I could see how the roads could get slick.

Turns out closing schools today in Cannon County was probably a good idea. There are patches of black ice and a rollover MVA has been reported this AM. In retrospect they should have closed schools yesterday although they did let the kids out at 11AM. Yesterday they ended up closing the road between Woodbury and Auburntown because of ice.

BTW, Chelsea I also do most of my work in a hospital with a lot of it ER related.

Road conditions are worse here this morning than they were yesterday. We have a light mist falling off and on and the temp has dropped to 30. Most of the secondary roads are OK, just wet, but the lesser traveled roads are quite slick in spots. I have a long driveway and it was totally ice covered. I just slipped and slid to the highway because I knew the state boys would have it clear. ;D

I noticed the ice on my car this morning.  It looks like they salted the roads around here.

Have the models backed off on the warming trend for early next week?  That's what the Knoxville AFD says this afternoon...

The GFS, at least, is to an extent. The GFS MOS was showing 60s early next week for CSV. Now it shows 50 Sunday, 55 Monday, 49 Tuesday, 48 Wednesday.

I'm not convinced the GFS has a good handle on our temperature trends right now. There are some fairly significant differences between the GFS and the NAM in regards to temps tomorrow and tomorrow night.

Personally, if it's going to be seasonable, I'd just as soon have temps in the 60s as temps in the 40s. :D

I agree wholeheartedly, unless it makes my spring weeds start popping up!  I'd rather wait as long as possible on that...
