I saw that and I was wondering the same thing.  Perhaps they use a blend of the Op GFS and its' ensembles.  I dunno...

All I see is a red "x"...
Anywho, just watched James Spann's video blog and he is still on the possible "record-setting cold" bandwagon.  A model he showed has a -30 thickness right over TN.  Now the question I pose to all you more intelligent types is what is that -30?  Is it -30C, or -30F (surely to goodness not), or something else entirely?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I saw a red X too.  To see the map, I right-clicked the red X, clicked Properties, and then copied the URL in the dialog.  When I pasted the URL into my browser address bar, I saw it.

Eric,

The -30 is Celsius, I believe.  But, keep in mind that this is at about 5000 feet up in the air (if I'm not mistaken).  So, the air may not be quite as cold at the surface.

BUT... if the C to F calculator I just used is correct, then -30 degree Celsius equates to -22 degrees Fahrenheit.

It's -30 Celsius but I'm not 100% sure what that would translate to at the surface as far as Farenheit goes.  Taken literaly, I think -30C translates to -20F or so.  Again, I'm not sure what that would be at the surface.

By the way, in the map Ron posted (if you can get past the red X), it shows Middle TN being between -4 and -8 degrees F at 1200hrs on February 5.

I assume that would be a closer indication of what it thinks the temps will be at ground level at that time.

Most likely the GFS is overdone.  However, it wouldn't surprise me to see some single digits in parts of the area if it holds up.  It's been a while since we've been below 0 in these parts.  I just hope we have a little snow to go along with it!  :x

Yeah, even if the GFS has overshot it by 10 or 15 degrees... that's still pretty dag gum cold!

Fixed the graphic on previous page.

You've got to remember, GFS is trying to grab a chunk of the actual PV and push it down here. That will be supercold any way you slice it.

BTW, Eric -30 is not a thickness measure. You're talking about the -30' isotherm on the 800mb map. That's about 5000 ft up. Thickness is the measure of how "deep" a layer of air is between two pressure heights (e.g. 1000mb-500mb).
Views expressed are my personal views and opinions and should not take the place of official forecasts and warnings issued by the NWS and your local media.

Thanks for the clarification, Ron.

Even if the GFS is overdoing it, like TS said, it will definitely be pipe freezing weather...

Quick check of the URL shows it came from FoxNews:

The picture was taken in Nekoosa, WI, by Canadian National Railroad workers.
