Oh, I missed one...

I think Christmas 1986 was a white Christmas.  We had snow on Christmas Eve (maybe a couple of inches?).

Do the records say anything about that?

(that could have been 1984 or 1985... but, I think it was '86)

Dec 1989 was also remembered correctly. We had freezing rain that began the night of the 7th and continued until the morning of the 8th.

We also had a frigid stretch for a December that year with a HIGH temp of 3'F and a low of -10'F on the 22nd!!!

Don't think so. There was rain on Christmas Eve 1986, but the high was 46' and on Christmas Day was 42'F. The lows were 37'F and 36'F respectively.

Ahh it was Christmas Day 1985. We had a trace of snow on the ground from snowshowers that began Christmas Eve afternoon and also another separate round reported at Noon on Christmas Day.  The high temp on Christmas Day was 19' with a low of 10'

Maybe it was 1985.

Where do you go to look up this information?

http://www7.ncdc.noaa.gov goto LCDs (Local Climate Data). I'm not sure which data reports cost and which don't since they're all free for me (it detects my .gov server).

January of 1994 wasn't really that frigid, but we did have 2 days not making it above 20. The low for the month was -1'F.

The catastrophic ice storm of 94 occurred Feb 10 and 11th. I remember that one well too! Kept me busy helping my friend and his dad clear limbs from their Greenbrier home!

Hmm.  It just says "Hi" when I go to that link... could be blocked, I suppose.

Where Christmas 1986 is concerned, I probably should have quit while I was ahead.  But, I did find a site with historical weather info and see that on December 24, 1985, there was a high of 47 and low of 17 with .02 in of precipitation.  The next day, December 25, 1985, the high was 19 and the low was 10!  But, no precipitation was reported.

So, at the very least, a strong (arctic) cold front apparently came through and sent the temps plummeting on Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day was frigid.  Just guessing with a small amount of precip that there could have been flurries or snow showers that I'm remembering.  I remember it covering the ground... but nothing that big.  It's probably just exaggerated in my mind.

So, I'm guessing I was off a year, and it wasn't that big of a deal... except for the frigid temps on Christmas Day.

Oh well... I'm done reminiscing.

Check my post above about Christmas 1985. I edited it to say I found it for 1985, but not 1986. ;)

Here, try this link - http://www7.ncdc.noaa.gov/IPS/LCDPubs?action=getstate&LCD=hardcode

It says my access will require a payment.  So, I guess it's not free outside of gov.

It was Christmas 1985.  I was just off by a year.  Actually, if I remember correctly, it was an "Alberta Clipper"... at least that's what they were calling it on TV... (see I paid attention to weather that closely at only ten years old.  I must've been a nerd. )

Yep we were both geeks apparently. I was the exact same way. It started by reading every book the library had on the subject. My dad was a pilot and I used to get on the BBS (the old way to get online before internet) for the airport weather office and get all the technical info I could. I even called the tower one time after my dad took me to visit the NWS there (one of the highlights of my childhood)!

Then there was the time my whole class (I think it was first grade) got to go to WTVF's studio since I was on a news story (for bowling tournament). We got a tour of the weather office there too (at that time Ron Howes was the only real met in Nashville). A couple years later, I got a tour of WSMV's weather office although Bill Hall wasn't there at the time (I did meet Demetria and Rudy). Fast forward to about 19 or 20 years old and I started shooting storm vids. I sold them to News2 and one time I dropped off the tape was a weekend. Neil Orne (he was doing weather at that time) and I sat down and talked for a while. He asked me to stay for a bit and I watched them do some live shots. Good time was had by all. :D

I miss ole Bill Hall.  He was my hero when I was a kid.  When I was in about the third grade, I said I wanted to be a weatherman when I grew up.  Bill wasn't technically a met.  But, he seemed to combine his interpretation of the computer models with his local experience and gut instinct.  And, sometimes he would get it right when no one else would.

He always warned about the unpredictable effects of an "upper air storm."

LOL! Yeah he used to always say something about those pesky upper air storms.

He did get it right a lot of the time, but a lot of the time ch4 overestimated snowfall potentials. I remember I never liked watching Ch5 as a kid because they would always be under Ch4's snow forecast. Ch5 usually got it right though. LOL.

That's probably why I liked listening to him.   8)

Oddly enough, though, I've noticed that Channel 4 has been the most snow pessimistic recently (I guess since Lisa Spencer and Nancy Van Camp have been at the helm).  But, as it's turned out, they've been the most accurate in that area.  :(

When I first moved back to TN in 2000 and had to find a local TV station, I would "spot watch" all three....Weather coverage first, then news.  I have to like the "people" anchoring.  I LOVE WKRN's morning NEWS and enjoy all of their Mets, but will watch my evening NEWS on Channel 5.

Whenever there is a WALL-TO-WALL event, I will SPLIT between the two channels, as long as Ron Howes is in da house during the coverage on Channel 5.  I can watch all the mets on 2 with no problem.

There....I just had a widely scattered ramble there....

Yeah, I channel-surf the locals during the the wall-to-wall also.

You don't want to miss any of the breaking news where it is first reported.
