Early winter, says the bugs
« on: July 12, 2010, 06:55:50 AM »
Everyone knows ;) that the first frost is three months from when katydids start their nightly serenade. I heard my first one on July 2 this year, which is about two weeks earlier than normal up here. Others said they were hearing them in late June, which I don't doubt.

So take heart on these 95 degree days. If our grandmothers are correct, cold air is going to be a little early this fall.  :D

I know I'm in the minority but I'm in NO rush for the cold and dreariness of winter, especially after this past season which seemed eternal.  I like to refer to winter in TN as "Brown Season", which runs from mid November to mid March.

Come on Winter!! I don't like this heat we're enduring (thank God for the relief this week, although it'll probably be short lived) at all. Winter is like Ice Cream to me; top it off with chocolate syrup or anything else that you like, and you have snow added to the equation.

i dont want to break anybodys  hearts for this wnter. but what i am seeing i fairly strong la nina west based could be more of a milder type winter with some sporadic cold spells. but watch out for some severe weather events and it could be some significant ones at that. time will tell.

In a lot of La Nina winters, by looking at stats, and some of the past ones we been though it seems like we have a very limited fall season.  For instance in 2007 we went from Above Average to October, to slightly below average and more winter conditions in November.  Then we had our roller-coaster winter of 07-08.  I wouldn't say an early freeze, or winter like conditions, but we could go from summer like to winter like very fast, with little moderate fall like temperatures.

What does Winter 11-12 hold??
The NAO,PNA,PDO,MJO, etc.. and Storm Track will decide.

The CFS depicts near normal temps next winter and the CPC is forecasting a slightly elevated chance of above normal temps with above normal precip.

I'm just hoping that September/October don't bring that much rain like last year ...  ::)
