What Would It Take for TN to Get a MAJOR Snowstorm???
« on: February 28, 2010, 03:06:01 PM »
With Winter wrapping up, and 'probably' just one more light snow possible for East TN/South TN, I decided to ask the people that have been around for a while and know at least a bit more than I do with the Winter Snows, "What would it take for a MAJOR Snowstorm to hit TN??"

I'm talking more than a foot (close to two feet, if not MORE than that) of snow. I realize that it has happened before in the 93 blizzard and a couple more snowstorms, but what does it really take for us to really get 'hammered' with close to DC 2010 snow??

Thanks!!

Move TN North a 1,000 miles? Root on the next ice age?

For something like two feet or more...outside of the mountains...that's really all you can hope for. It's not happened in recorded history among all the cities in the state I can find records for...again outside the mountains. CHA was closest with 20" in '93. Memphis and Nashville's records were both from the March 1892 storm...both around 18".

For more than a foot...you can add a few events to the list...but still not many where there were such totals on a widespread level. Even 1993 only affected Eastern TN with heavy snows. 1988 may be the closest match...which we've discussed plenty of times this winter. Might be worth it to look up the evolution of the 1892 storm...never really looked at it honestly.

Thanks Kevin!! I was wondering how many snows had reached that in the past, and I guess only a few have, and these even were locally.

Exactly one year ago from this date..... I was waiting for the snow, hoping that the snow would go far enough East from Middle TN.. Alas, it never happened, and I had nothing but flurries the next day. Oh well. You win some and you lose some, I guess

That made me so jealous and mad!! Memphis got like 5 inches, and i remember looking at the radar and it looked like it was heading up this way but then it changed and moved the opposite direction. grrr.. i still haven't gotten over that

HAHA I also noticed when I moved to Tennessee about 8 years ago, it would snow 2 inches and the temperature would be around 22 and it would be completely cloudy and the snow would STILL MELT!!! it made no since.
