Those stats don't seem right. Jackson, TN averages slightly less snowfall than Nashville, and you said the 12" was 76% of where they should be.

I think it's 76% above normal.

That's it.  It's not percentage of normal, but percentage above or below average to this point.  Sorry if it was hard to understand.  I thru them together during my lunch break because of my sneaking suspicion that most are cashing in this winter while certain areas remain unlucky.  It's hard to compare total and average snowfall across the region since its so varied.  However, when broken down as a % compared to an individual locations average you can easily tell who is getting the short end of the stick.  Tupelo, Huntsville, Nashville, and Knoxville are the only major reporting stations in the area that remain below normal.  In my opinion any area that ends up near average or below in this winter to remember is an epic failure.  Its like a wasting an opportunity to win a championship when all of the odds are in your favor.

Yep, and notice the numbers for DC...... Ahh, just painful to a native of Maryland....

Oh well. I guess there could be worse things than getting little snow  in a memorable Winter for most people. At least we're all alive to see another day

It appears that most of middle tennessee (with a few exceptions) will  end up in the 5"-8" range for snowfall.  We are sitting at 6.25" here in Lascassas.

Downright embarrasing when you think of the amazing lineup of factors that seemed to be in our favor this winter:

1) Very active southern jetstream driving disturbances to our south every few days

2)  Reduced solar radiation due to a year of unusually low sunspot activity

3)  Persistently negative NAO resulting in part from rare high latitude volcanic eruptions

Truly amazing.  This constellation of factors will not occur together again for years.

On to Spring!   ::yum::

Interesting. If 7.1 inches is 108% of normal, that indicates that our average should be 6.5. I believe that this is incorrect. Most figures I have seen for KCHA indicate that the average is somewhere between 4.8 and 5.2 inches per year, which places us somewhere between 136% and 148% of normal. Our average from 1997-2009 was like 0.4 per year I think.
Winter 2009-10 Snowfall: 11.5 in. :)
Winter 2010-11 Snowfall: 15.5 in. :)

Very interesting. It's surprising that Chattanooga and the Tri-Cities are both 100% above normal while Knoxville is significantly below normal.

It's also telling that we have about 20" of snow on top of the Plateau, just 50 miles as the crow flies from Knoxville, where only 5" have been recorded. A clear case of the haves and have nots. Makes you wonder what it's going to take for Knoxville to ever have "normal" annual snowfall.

We have had around 14-15" of snow this winter, that is fine with me if we do not see more. But I would also welcome some more snow if it chose to come this way. ;)

Here's the link I used for the numbers:
http://www.weather.gov/climate/index.php?wfo=mrx

Average snow to this point for Chatt is 3.4, meaning with the 7.1 total so far they are 3.7 above normal at this point.  That means to this point Chattanooga is 108% above normal not 108% of normal.  Sorry the percentages were confusing, I should have found a different way to state it. That's what I get for throwing it together on my lunch break.  ;D
