Winter threat around Feb. 8-9
« on: February 02, 2010, 12:00:57 PM »
Kept this seperate from the late week/weekend system. GFS shows several inches even at HSV within a week

Snow in the South is wonderful. It has a kind of magic and mystery that it has nowhere else. And the reason for this is that it comes to people in the South not as the grim, unyielding tenant of Winter's keep, but as a strange and wild visitor from the secret North. -THOMAS WOLFE

Yep I've been watching this one more so than the one due in this weekend. I can see this one materializing into something worth watching.

2/2 12Z ECMWF shows a rain event with maybe a few wrap around flurries at the end. Storm track is not bad but there is not enough cold air to give us much snow. Still a ways off though.

Davis Nolan thinks there may be a big chance for a snow next week.  See his latest posting at http://nashvillewx.com/2010/02/two-extended-forecast-2-snow-chances-one-may-be-big-more-arctic-air-next-week/

How many Gulf lows will happen in this month???

They seem to be stacked up, one after the other....

I want to see some of that cold air locked in and have the same pattern occuring...then it's snow time.

Before excitement begins.... the ECMWF is not in our favor... Remember that the ECMWF was the most accurate long range model on our Friday/Saturday snow event.

Tom just because on run of the euro is not in our favor does not mean that it will not be in our favor later. ::shaking_finger::

True; but lets not get our hopes way to up for this then be disappointed later on (to us newbies haha). Also, we shouldn't even be expecting anything (rain/freezing rain/snow/EVEN clouds) from the low this far out.

Talking about the possibilities of winter weather is not the same as "expecting". This is what a weather forum is for, for goodness sakes! But not expecting even clouds or some type of precip. from a system that we know will be there sometime during early next week is pretty bizarre imo. ::bangingheadintowall::

Awful big talk for a system nearly a week out, but then again Mr. Nolan always likes to talk snow. It will be interesting to see how this develops, it reminds me of a storm we had not to long ago but for the life of me I just cant remember which one ::pondering:: ::pondering::. Looks like a lot of cold air after it passes will be dumped in here, so who knows what may happen during the time frame following "the next potential big storm."

IF this system does come in, I'd like for the rain/snow line to be waaaaayyyyy to the South, because before the event, I was supposed to get 8 inches, even from the NWS/NOAA.gov sites. However, the snow started mixing early on, and it just never matieralized. Of course, we got about 3.5-4 inches, but come on....
