Still heavy snow here in Monterey.  Where did this come from?  NOAA said maybe in inch for today.  At home in Cookeville, I had probably an inch this morning at 6:30.  It started last night with a quick, dry dusting that the wind was blowing around everywhere, and had quit by bedtime.  I get up this morning and there is more on the ground, with moderate snow falling.  Up on the hill here in Monterey, crazy, big, puffy snow flakes.  It is a very pretty snow.

My guess is the upper level vort has fired up some convective snow bands...aided with a little upsloping.

I don't understand why the central Tn Valley is not under an advisory.  Roads are becoming snow covered, we have an inch or so of snow or the ground, and it is still snowing moderately.  I would think we merit an advisory at this point.

And once again, the snow has reformed over our area again. I don't know whats causing it to do so, but hey, I'm not complaining.

Actually road conditions are much worse than when we were under a Winter Storm Warning during the last "event," because of the colder conditions.  The roads were also not pretreated as last time because this was not in the forecast.

Does anyone have any idea why when the temps are below freezing and sun is covered by the clouds, that the roads melt??? I have always wondered that.

Even if the sun is hidden, it's still shooting down UV rays which get absorbed by darker colored surfaces...the same principle as when you get into a dark-colored car in the middle of the summer.  Darker colored surfaces absorb WAY more heat than other surfaces. That'd be my guess anyways... ::shrug::

The sun can still work its "magic" even through clouds if the temp is not too far from freezing.  It certainly can if they apply salt.  And it's February now, so the sun angle is getting higher as spring approaches.

I'm about 30 miles east of K-town, and it is snowing moderately.  Grass no longer visible.

Yep, that's why you can get a sunburn even on a cloudy day.

Snow has pretty much stopped here.  Talked to people in Watertown and Mt. Juliet who say the roads are covered.  I wonder if they will melt before school gets out?  Is the snow finished for this area?

Just got back from lunch.  Main roads are ok, secondary are slick.  Snow continues, but is lighter now.
