Well we did wind up getting about .25 in total precip, 99% rain, 1% sleet at the very start yesterday. Looking forward to flurries on Friday though. Maybe we can squeeze out a dusting down here. You would not believe the amount of standing water from only a quarter inch of rain. It looks like a 2 inch rainfall.

Roads cleared off here because after the snow quite falling, our temp. was at 34.2F. Roads are still damp and we are now below freezing and shouldn't climb back up above freezing til tomorrow.

I'm hoping we see some more snow showers tonight, maybe some of you who didn't get some this morning may get some then...

Does anyone think travel is going to be a problem tonight into tomorrow morning with all this standing water and the low temps?

I do, any water that is left on the roadways will freeze over this afternoon and evening into tomorrow morning. The blustery winds may help dry up some roadways, but not all.

Nashville officially measured 1.5" last night, bringing our seasonal total to 6.3".  This is the most snow the city has officially recorded since 2003.

Just need a couple of more decent events or perhaps one big event, then we might actually finish with a normal year, snowwise...

The sad thing is, this is already the fourth snowiest year of the last 20, and we still haven't even reached our long-term seasonal average yet.

The newbie locals who haven't lived here long think we're having an unusually snowy year.  This is actually what "normal" actually is.  Their frame of reference is off since only being here during the snow drought.  ;)

Here in Hopkinsville we are above average for the first time since 2002-03 where we had about 15 inches seasonal.  So far we are at 13.0 inches for the year. Also Owensboro, and I believe Murray and several areas in NW Mid TN have reached above average. Hopkinsville averages about the same as Nashville does the average for Hopkinsville is 9.1 inches. In my lifetime I was born in the winter of 88-89 only 2 winters have had more snow than this one 95-96(19.0) 02-03(15.0) those two winters are estimates so give or take an inch for 02-03 and give or take an inch or two for 95-96; since for some strange reason there isn't a lot of data with these two.

In my lifetime from 88-89 on looking at Nashville you have one winter 92-93 that is average with 9 inches.  95-96 and 02-03 are above average, and than the most the others aren't even close to average.  You have 88-89 with almost 7 inches and to date 09-10 with a little over 6 inches(which could and may increase esp. with the -NAO, -AO pattern)

What does Winter 11-12 hold??
The NAO,PNA,PDO,MJO, etc.. and Storm Track will decide.

The sad thing is, this is already the fourth snowiest year of the last 20, and we still haven't even reached our long-term seasonal average yet.
::doh::

More sad comparisons:
Nashville avg yearly snow: 10.0" - record 38.5
OKC avg: 9.5 - record 25.2"
DC National avg: 16.6" - record 54.4"

http://lwf.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/online/ccd/snowfall.html

Year to date snowfall:
BNA: 6.3"
OKC: 19.9"
DCA: 45.1"
(with another massive storm on the doorstep)
 ::bangingheadintowall::
Oklahoma City already has their 7th snowiest year and is a minor snow away from the top 5.  DC is about to have the snowiest year ever and we sit just over half our average.  ::bangingheadintowall:: ::bangingheadintowall::

We are so close to having a blockbuster year.  We have been solidly below normal with temps and above normal precip.  I was firmly convinced that we were going to have a 20-25" inch year and bust out of the snowdrought.  There is still hope, but the old saying about not forcasting rain in a drought must apply to snow as well.  With so many things in our favor we are having to battle just to get to normal snowfall.  ::shrug::

On a positive note, there is still a good month of potential in front of us.  However, this cold and mostly wet pattern has even the snowlover in me looking forward to spring.

I'm trying to remember our snow events this year. I think we may have close to 10" this year in Macon County, but since Lafayette got 9.5" of snow when I got 6" the past event...they have maybe around 15" if not a little more.

I find it fascinating that we are still below average, yet have had many systems to track. Fun stuff!

Well, if it didn't snow for the rest of the winter, we would end below average, but there's another month left.  I said that we haven't reached our seasonal average yet (in the context that even if it didn't snow one more flake, this is still the fourth snowiest over the last 20 years)... not that we were "below average" at this point in the winter.  Sorry for the confusion.

Right now, I would say we are very near average at this point in the season.  We just need the rest of February and March to be average, and we'll be good.  This is all just a statistical interest though.

Aside from whatever threats we have over the next couple of weeks, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that we have at least one more major threat, possibly in early March.  Whether it actually pans out or not, remains to be seen.

All it will take is one big blockbuster storm to send us to above average levels for the winter.

Don't look to Friday yet folks, returns building to our immediate northwest.

This is a huge vort, if it starts tapping the lower level moisture, we could get an inch tonight (and temps much below freezing)

Born in D.C I survived 1993 and 1996 snowstorms, and have been fascinated ever since.
