The details are a little hard to decipher on the freebie version of the EURO.

But, a general look indicates a system moving through the Southeast with cold air in place, with very cold, even colder air coming in behind it.
I wish that we could get QPF on the Euro...alas.

Just woke up to check the late night models and look at that lovable little Euro model.  Usually the pain in our backside but this time giving us some hope...if only until the next model run.  I hope it stays for a few runs.     ::fingerscrossed::

Other than the Euro the GFS is still suppressing everything in sight after New Years.

MEG AFD about the Arctic blast:

Quote
DRY WEATHER ALONG WITH BELOW AVERAGE TEMPERATURES WILL PERSIST ON
FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY. A CLIPPER TYPE SYSTEM IS FORECAST TO MOVE
ACROSS THE SOUTHERN STATES SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT.
THIS SYSTEM MAY BRING A PERIOD OF LIGHT SNOW TO THE AREA NEXT
WEEKEND. PRECIP TYPE SHOULD REMAIN ALL SNOW AS TEMPERATURES SHOULD
REMAIN UNSEAONABLY COLD
. THIS SYSTEM WILL ALSO USHER IN AN ARCTIC
AIRMASS FOR MUCH OF NEXT WEEK.
TEMPERATURES SHOULD BE THE COLDEST
OF THE WINTER SEASON AND WILL LIKELY REMAIN 15 TO 20 DEGREES BELOW
AVERAGE. IN FACT...TEMPERATURES MAY REMAIN BELOW FREEZING FOR AN
EXTENDED PERIOD NEXT WEEK. SO EXPECT A RETURN TO DRY BUT VERY COLD
WEATHER FOR THE EXTENDED FORECAST PERIOD
.

By the way, a pet peeve of mine concerning something they said... "unseasonably cold"?

20s in April would be unseasonably cold.  Just like 70s in January would be unseasonably warm.  But, any talk of "unseasonably" cold weather at the first of January?  ::pondering::

Temperatures may be "below average," but definitely not "unseasonable."  This is precisely the "season" when weather like this can happen.  So, "unseasonably"... it's not.  ;)

Everyone keeps saying that its early and winter just started, but we keep missing out on very good chances as we sit here and watch snows go all around us, by the way Dallas is expexting 1 to 3 inches again in the early winter which makes the third snow for them, dang it!

Is there and chance of a good low developing on the tail end of this arctic front thats gonna move thru later this week after the cold air is in place and the ground frozen?

The 0Z EURO last night implied something interesting like that along those lines.

The 12Z GFS is rolling out now.  Let's see what it says...

Lets us know. That would be the perfect set up, that way maybe the precip wouldn't push the cold air out. ::snowman::

At this point I'd be happy with a couple inches of dry powdery snow.

Well, things stay suppressed through 144 hours, or Monday, on the 12Z GFS... still sticking with the cold theme though.

There's something brewing in the NW Gulf though.  It's a question of whether it can be shown to sling anything up our way in time.
