We have been having an off again - on again flizzard for about an hour! Well, it does make it more Christmasy!

Merry Christmas everyone!

EDIT- 11:38 a.m. Temps have dropped to just at freezing.. the ground is now getting dusted. It's sticking to the cars too!

I see the activity on radar in the areas where you all are reporting it.

Hope it holds together and makes it into Davidson County.   ::snow::

From MEG:

Quote
The Midsouth Experiences Very Rare Snowfall on Christmas Day
This year Memphis had some snowfall on Christmas Day! Only on three other occasions did Memphis have snow on Christmas Day.  Those years were 1975, 1980, and 1992.  Memphis has never reported measurable snow on Christmas Day (0.1" or greater).  The snowfall on Christmas Day 2009 only amounted to a trace, so it didn't officially make for a white Christmas which is defined as having 0.5" or more of snow on the ground at 6 am. Still, it made for a festive atmosphere at least for a little while. The last time Memphis had an official white Christmas was in 1998 when an inch was officially reported on the ground at 6 am.

A little light snow began falling early this morning over east Arkansas, the Missouri Bootheel, and extreme west Tennessee. The snow began around 5 am and a trace of snow was visible on the ground just after sunrise if you were up early enough.  It disappeared rapidly as temperatures warmed above freezing. Jackson, Tennessee and points east had some snow falling through 9 am.

Hmmmm methinks MEG needs to check history a little more closely. Records show the last measurable falling snow came on Christmas day in 1913, about 3.5 inches. Also the last white Christmas in Memphis was 2004 rather than 1998. ::pondering::

guess they dont count sleet(2004) as being considered a white xmas. even though the ground was plenty white with almost 4 and half inches of pure sleet here in jackson.

Sleet actually counts when it comes to a white Christmas. 1998 was all sleet too.
