Coldest Winter In 30 Years
Meteorologist
Bobby Boyd
National Weather Service
Nashville,. Tennessee

It's been unusually cold this winter across Middle Tennessee with all three winter months averaging below normal in temperature at Nashville for the first time since the winter of 1977-1978.

The months of December, January and February are considered the meteorological winter by most meteorologist and climatologists as opposed to the astronomical winter which begins with the winter solstice and ends with the vernal equinox.  With continued cold temperatures in the forecast it looks  like February 2010 will end up 6.8 degrees below normal making it the 12th coldest February on record in Nashville and the coldest since 1979.

Also, the temperature for this winter (Dec,Jan,Feb) averaged 35.6 degrees making the meteorological winter of 2009-2010 the 11th coldest on record and the coldest since the winter of 1978-1979.

From MEG regarding winter 09-10. It is interesting to note that several of the coldest winters are clustered near each other. In fact 4 of them in Memphis (didnt check MKL or TUP), 63-63 (La Nina), 63-64 (El Nino), 77-78 (El Nino), 78-79(neutral) were back to back. It looks likes ENSO may not be a fault entirely. Obviously many other factors come into play. I have noticed that snowy winters come in packs as well, so patterns can certainly repeat themselves. This could make for an interesting Winter '10-'11.

Well something fun I am going to do before its too late. I have given myself some vacation time, so I must figure out when the higher elevations of the smokies could get slammed. Elevations above 850mb should have at least a couple chances of some pretty significant snow. Hiking Clingmans dome and Leconte should yield some wild weather changes. Wanting to do something crazy before the season ends. Saved up some energy.
