"Significant Weather Mode": Special Rules/Policies
« on: January 23, 2010, 03:11:54 PM »
After discussion amongst the TennesseeWx staff, we will be implementing a new "signficant weather event mode" on the forum.

This would involve a temporary tightened & restricted set of rules where posting on the forum is concerned.  The aim here is to control some of the incessant questioning, bickering, and otherwise uninformative posts that cause reader frustration during times of intense weather discussion when a weather event, whether it be winter weather or severe weather, is either imminent or in progress.
The idea here is to specify periods of time when stricter rules will be enforced.  When the designated time period expires, then rules will revert back to normal, more relaxed rules.
This "mode" would only apply to the main discussion threads regarding the weather event now in progress, and would NOT effect the other non-event threads.  The forum will give advance notice of "severe wx mode" implementation, dependent upon impending weather conditions and the nature of the impending weather event.

Again, these new rules and policies will only go into effect during “significant severe weather event mode”.  If these rules and policies are not adhered to, we will sequester the offending member until we return the forum to normal operations, and posting privileges will be suspended.

You MAY ask questions provided that the question has not already been asked and answered.  Please read the thread thoroughly before asking questions, since it may have already been addressed.

You MAY post observations if they are relevant to the discussion of the thread, provided that it is not overly redundant and repetitive of other posts.  Please read all recent posts carefully before posting.

You MAY NOT engage in flaming or aggravation of other members.

You MAY NOT post short posts containing only statements of exclamation or irritation or posts with only smileys if they contribute nothing to the discussion.  These will be deleted.

You MAY NOT post maps, charts, modeling...etc without some sort of explanation.

You MAY NOT ask questions with regard to specific locations when the existing discussion sufficiently addresses expectations for the area that includes said location.

You MAY NOT exercise in childish banter during severe weather event discussions.  The forum has a chat room available for such a purpose.  These posts will be deleted.
If you feel you are the target of abusive behavior, please utilize the "Report to Moderator" function included within your individual forum post boxes.

The Forum staff reserves the right to delete posts as necessary that we feel detract from the weather analysis/discussion.  The Forum staff also reserves the right to change these rules without notice at any time.

Please remember that these rules will ONLY GO INTO EFFECT DURING PERIODS OF SEVERE WEATHER.  During periods of non-severe weather, the regular forum rules and policies are in effect.

As a staff, we strive to ensure that our membership has an enjoyable stay while here, and recent experiences have shown that more control needs to be exhibited during severe weather events.  We hope these new rules and policies will help alleviate some of the problems and issues we all experienced.  We have rules..We're nice people....but you come in with nonsense, we cut your posts and throw you out.

Furthermore, for those that strive to learn more about all things weather, we will begin building a database of websites that we hope will give everyone a chance to educate themselves about the thing that ties us all together here at TennesseeWx

Effective 4/14/2011...
Addition to SWM Forum Rules and Policies

In situations where TennesseeWx staff issues our Significant Weather Mode for severe weather (convective) events...when a severe weather warning is posted within the active thread...you MUST adhere to the following format in posting the warning...

Quote
Begin Paste of Warning at "NWS in XXX has Issued" Line

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN NASHVILLE HAS ISSUED A

* TORNADO WARNING FOR...
SOUTHERN DAVIDSON COUNTY IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE...
EASTERN WILLIAMSON COUNTY IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE...

* UNTIL 545 PM CDT

* AT 505 PM CDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CAPABLE OF PRODUCING A TORNADO. THIS DANGEROUS
STORM WAS LOCATED 6 MILES SOUTHWEST OF FOREST HILLS...OR 7 MILES
NORTHWEST OF FRANKLIN...AND MOVING NORTHEAST AT 45 MPH.

* THIS DANGEROUS STORM WILL BE NEAR...
FOREST HILLS...BELLE MEADE AND BRENTWOOD AROUND 515 PM CDT.
OAK HILL AROUND 520 PM CDT.
LP FIELD AND NASHVILLE AROUND 525 PM CDT.

End Paste of Warning at "Cites to be Impacted" List

This format also applies to the "Severe Weather Statement" (SVS) product that is issued as a follow-up to the original warning.

Exceptions to this format may be made only where there is additional information after the "Cities to be Impacted" list that includes confirmed reports of severe weather and/or damage. Such information before that point in the warning will already be allowable and should be included in this format.

Also...remember to use quote boxes around the warning text and any NWS product...this is a rule in place at all times...regardless of an active SWM.
